Hockey is one of our most popular sports in school and has been for many decades.
At the start of the hockey season this year, there were hundreds of girls coming out to run laps and improve the hockey skills.
Now all of these girls have been split into 20 teams, 17 of which are competing in Leinster school leagues. As a very successful hockey school many of our teams reach the finals each year.
The five senior teams are made up of 6th years, 5th years and older 4th years. All of whom have made time in their busy schedule to come out to training, which has really paid off!
Our Senior 1 team plays in the premier division which is the top school division in Leinster. To play at this level a high playing standard is required. Shannon Clarke played for the Leinster under 16 this year and is one of many girls to have represented Muckross at this level of hockey.
The junior teams are made up of 3rd years and 4th years. This is the first time for some of the girls to play with other years and it seems that they are really enjoying it. All the work they are putting in is really paying off. Three teams in the next round.
The minor teams are made up of 2nd years. As they are now more experienced players after their year of basic training, they are learning more advanced techniques which are being put to the test, with positive results!
The first years have really shown a very strong attitude to hockey with over a hundred coming out for training! We are only able to enter two teams into school leagues at this level. Both of which are doing really well. The remaining teams are enjoying friendly matches where they are improving their skills and game technique. Later on in the year they will have some tournaments to participate in.
